Ear Mites or Allergies in Vancouver Pets

When your dogs or cats are scratching at their ears, does it mean that they have ear mites? Although you might worry about a mite infestation, keep in mind that scratching and other symptoms could also indicate ear allergies rather than ear mites. Learn more about how to tell the difference between these two health problems in pets.

Signs of Ear Mites in Vancouver Pets

Pets that have an ear mite problem sometimes have symptoms that are similar to ear allergies. Knowing the difference between these conditions can help you determine which problem your pets have. Common symptoms of ear mite infestations in Vancouver pets include the following:

  • Scratching frequently
  • Rubbing ears frequently
  • Shaking the head
  • Ear redness that indicates inflammation
  • Brownish or black discharge that has a waxy texture
  • Foul odor in the ears

If your pets exhibit any of these symptoms, it is important to have our veterinarian see them to determine if they have an ear mite problem or ear allergies. Ear mite infestations can cause other problems, such as ruptured blood vessels in the ears from frequent scratching.

Signs of Common Ear Allergies

Cats and dogs in Vancouver can develop allergies that affect their ears. Common allergens that pets have include pollen, dust mites, mold, flea bites, cleaning products and corn, soy and other ingredients in pet foods. Pets that have allergies might have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Itchy ears that lead to frequent scratching or pawing
  • Redness in the ears from scratching
  • Shaking the head

Keep in mind that pets with ear allergies might also have other symptoms, such as sneezing, itchy tail, runny eyes, itchy paws or itchy skin. Pets with an ear mite problem usually only have symptoms that affect the ears.

  • "Absolutely amazing Doctor along with the receptionist! We traveled from Calgary to see Dr.Charach and our dog left the clinic with relief. Not only did he have fabulous attention and care for our dog, he also had it for my husband and I as we were a mess as we had no idea what was wrong nor did the Vets in Calgary. Our dog is still needing care and Dr.Charach and his team still provide amazing service over the phone!"

  • "I don't have enough positive words to describe how thankful I am about Dr. Charach expertise and his team's kindness...I wish I had found Dr. Charach before spending thousands of dollars with no results. I don't consider his fees unreasonable considering the amazing results I had. The clinic's staff was very organized, super nice and knowledgeable. 5 stars all the way to Dr. Charach and the clinic's team."

  • "I have been so grateful for Dr. Charach’s dermatology expertise in treating my shar pei’s seasonal allergies, skin infections and food allergies. He takes the time to go over the history every visit to ensure that we are not confusing the symptoms with other possible diagnosis. He is also very up to date on all the current immunotherapy and pharmaceutical options. I always leave his office with a plan and feel that my dog has been well cared for. Over the past 5 years I have seen significant improvement in my dog’s quality of life and thanks to Dr. Charach. I recommend Dr. Charach to any animal with skin issues."
