German Shepherd Allergies

Common German Shepherd Allergies in Vancouver and Richmond

All dogs can develop allergies, but some breeds are more prone to certain allergies than others. German shepherds can end up being allergic to fleas, foods, chemical products, and other allergens, which can cause mild to severe discomfort. At Animal Dermatology Specialists of Vancouver, our veterinarians diagnose and treat German Shepherd allergies in Vancouver and Richmond.

Types of German Shepherd Allergies

German shepherds can develop allergies that mainly affect their skin. This is typically due to flea bites, certain foods or chemical ingredients in household products. Common allergies in these dogs include allergies to fleas, corn or other ingredients in commercial dog food and chemical irritants in cleaning products and other household items. When German shepherds come into contact with an allergen, it produces a harmful reaction that can irritate their skin and cause other types of discomfort. Keep in mind that German shepherds that have shorter or lighter coats are more likely to have skin allergies than those with thicker coats, especially allergies to chemical irritants that they are exposed to.

Causes of German Shepherd Allergies

German shepherds develop allergies when their immune system has a reaction to something that is usually harmless. When this occurs, their immune system mistakenly identifies a threat and attempts to get rid of it. This leads to allergy symptoms that affect the skin, such as a rash. Each time German shepherds are exposed to allergens that affect them, they have a similar reaction. These allergies usually do not go away over time, so it is important for pet owners to make sure that their dogs receive treatment. Allergy symptoms can become severe at times, leading to a lower quality of life and possible complications.

Allergy Symptoms in German Shepherd

German shepherds usually have symptoms that affect the skin when they are exposed to an allergen. These symptoms might include a rash, itchiness, hot spots, bald spots from scratching and redness. The itchiness that can occur from flea bites, certain foods, and chemical irritants can lead to other health issues for these dogs, such as infections caused by excessive scratching that breaks the skin. Symptoms of an infection include swelling, discharge, increased redness and a foul odor. Dogs that have any of these symptoms need to have veterinary care as soon as possible to prevent the infection from spreading.

Treatments for German Shepherd Allergies in Vancouver and Richmond

German shepherds with allergies can receive treatment that helps ease their symptoms. Our Vancouver and Richmond veterinarians might recommend avoiding allergens if possible, such as using flea prevention or switching to a dog food that does not have corn or other food allergens. In some cases, German shepherd allergies end up causing infections, which require antibiotics for treatment.

  • "Absolutely amazing Doctor along with the receptionist! We traveled from Calgary to see Dr.Charach and our dog left the clinic with relief. Not only did he have fabulous attention and care for our dog, he also had it for my husband and I as we were a mess as we had no idea what was wrong nor did the Vets in Calgary. Our dog is still needing care and Dr.Charach and his team still provide amazing service over the phone!"

  • "I have been so grateful for Dr. Charach’s dermatology expertise in treating my shar pei’s seasonal allergies, skin infections and food allergies. He takes the time to go over the history every visit to ensure that we are not confusing the symptoms with other possible diagnosis. He is also very up to date on all the current immunotherapy and pharmaceutical options. I always leave his office with a plan and feel that my dog has been well cared for. Over the past 5 years I have seen significant improvement in my dog’s quality of life and thanks to Dr. Charach. I recommend Dr. Charach to any animal with skin issues."
